Muhondo (Square Mile Coffee Roasters)

Rwanda is perhaps not the first country that comes to mind when we are thinking of places that grow coffee so when Muhondo turned up on our radar, we had to try it to see what it is about.

Its fruity character is obvious when you read the list of promised notes—tangerine, toffee, and apple. So how do you get at them?

Weight 18g of Muhondo beans. Forget grind settings 3 or 2 and go straight for the grind setting 1, otherwise water will flow through the ground coffee like a sieve barely noticing what tried to stop it.

Tamp on the heavy side and you ought to be able to brew 36g of espresso in 25-26s. It’s a bit tricky, but the notes make it worth the attention and effort.

Muhondo is a good choice for summer espresso, but it can work in the autumn too.

MIXING WITH MILK

Unlike some "fruity" coffees this one does not have a strong chocolate or nutty note, which means that the fruity notes are more pronounced when mixed with milk. This is the one coffee to go for if you are bored of chocolate notes dominating your cappuccino or flat white.

WHERE TO BUY

You can buy it from many coffee shops or directly from the Square Mile Coffee Roaster’s website (they also have a separate EU shop, make sure you place your order there if you are based in the EU).
